Would public executions do more to deter violent crime than private executions?

If a criminal has been sentenced to die, why not publicly execute them? Why is it hidden away? Perhaps more people will be afraid to commit crimes if they see literally what can happen to them. I'm thinking specifically about criminals like this 17yo boy Tyler Hadley, who murdered his parents with a hammer and then threw a party. Today's youth is very disturbed.
